Important notice

Be wary of contractor fraud and read all information before you sign any agreement with a contractor. Some contractor documents include an Assignment of Benefits. Signing an Assignment of Benefits, also referred to as an “AOB,” means the agreement authorizes the contractor to act on your behalf and may allow the contractor to receive funds directly from your insurance company, which is essentially signing away your rights.

National Insurance Crime Bureau Advice

– Work only with licensed and insured contractors
– Ask for references, and check them out
– Get more than one estimate
– Don’t be pushed into signing a contract right away

Make sure to:

– Total all costs
– Create detailed list of what the project includes
– Check time schedule, guarantees, and/or warranties provided
– Talk about payment schedule (don’t pay until work is completed)
– Never, ever sign a contract that includes blanks
