Kay began his career at a small insurance agency, specializing in personal lines and small business accounts. As his career progressed, he advanced his skills in evaluating risk for both medium-sized and small businesses. In 2001, Kay founded Granite Insurance Group, Inc., a commercial agency that provided businesses with tailored insurance solutions.

He holds the certified workers compensation advisor (CWCA) and certified insurance counselor (CIC) designations.
