Tips for Before, During, and After an Earthquake

Tips for Before, During, and After an Earthquake

Written by: Staff Writer | March 2, 2026

All states in the U.S. have experienced an earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. While areas closer to major fault lines feel their effects more often, it is important to know what to do in case an earthquake occurs at your home, business, or travel destination. To make sure you’re prepared, here are some tips to help you survive an earthquake and recover from any damage.

Before an Earthquake

  • Prepare a general first-aid kit for disasters that contains adequate medical supplies. Include warm clothing and essential medications. This may come in useful after a serious earthquake.
  • Ensure you have enough water and non-perishable food for a week for each person. Make sure you pack supplies for pets as well.
  • Research your area of residence, business, or travel to see how great the risk of earthquakes is in that location.
  • If you live in a high-risk area, retrofit and reinforce your home.
  • Secure heavy furniture to walls to decrease the risk of their falling.
  • Create a disaster plan with your family and designate an area where you will meet after the earthquake has ended in case of separation.

During an Earthquake

  • As soon as you feel an earthquake, follow these steps:
  1. Drop – Get on your hands and knees.
  2. Cover – Cover the back of your head and neck with your hands. Find a table or desk to crawl under to minimize the chance of being struck by falling objects.
  3. Hold on – Hold on to one of the legs of the table with your hand, while still covering your neck and head.
  • Avoid windows, furniture that can fall over, cabinets, and shelves.
  • Stay inside until the shaking stops.

After an Earthquake

  • Be prepared for aftershocks for the following days or weeks.
  • Ensure that there are no leaks in your gas lines.
  • Always wear closed-toed shoes to protect your feet from harmful debris.
  • Document any property damage with photographs.
  • Request a field adjuster to inspect your property when reporting your claim to your insurance carrier. Report the claim as soon as possible.
  • Keep any receipts from purchases or services used because of the loss. Your claim representative may request these for reimbursement purposes.

These helpful tips are just part of good preparation when facing an earthquake. To make sure you have the proper coverage in place for all your prized possessions, reach out to our personal insurance team at 1-833-546-2872.
