Traffic. Road construction. Detours. New exit ramps and new routes. All are part of the boom Birmingham, Alabama, is experiencing. And though the growth is welcome to many who live here or are moving here, accidents due to roadwork can take a toll on your personal auto costs. The good news is there are steps you can take to avoid accidents and keep car insurance under control.

Sadly, beautiful Birmingham moved up to the 15th worst American city for driving in Consumer Affairs’ 2025 report covering 327 U.S. cities. Five of the eight most accident-prone roads in the state go through or around Birmingham, according to crash data analyzed by law firm Wettermark Keith. Its study highlights “high traffic volumes, road conditions, and driver behavior” along with “complex driving environments” and “weather conditions” that create hazardous conditions. According to the study: 

• I-65’s stretch between Birmingham and Montgomery is a main corridor for north-south travel and is particularly “prone to accidents.” 

• I-20, an east-west route, “is fraught with danger, especially near Birmingham,” due to its high speed limit and construction zones. 

• U.S. 280, connecting Birmingham and Auburn, “is notorious for its high traffic volumes and frequent intersections.” 

• Morgan Road, a busy artery in Birmingham, has heavy congestion and numerous cross streets and business entrances, leading to higher than normal accident risk. 

• Malfunction Junction, the intersection of Interstates 20, 59, and 65, “is infamous” for its heavy volume and high number of accidents. 

Ways you can avoid car insurance costs on Birmingham roads

Alabama’s Department of Transportation is aware of the problems listed above and is taking action. For example, Highway 280 is getting a new lane and being repaved. A new bridge at Pump House Road also is going in on 280. On I-20/I-59 at Exit 104, ramp to some of the busiest industrial properties in the state, ALDOT is installing a diverging diamond interchange. And much other roadwork across the metro area is planned to improve flow and decrease accident frequency, but, while construction is underway, there will be significant traffic hazards, including lane closures and detours for the next few years. 

Those who live or work in Birmingham would be wise to take action to prevent costly automobile losses. Here are five steps you can take to reduce your risk of car accidents and keep auto insurance premiums in Birmingham under control: 

1. Know your route. Before setting out, check your GPS for the roads you plan to use. Alabama’s AlgoTraffic website allows you to see roadwork and accidents on a map that can be searched by city. If you don’t want to hit a construction zone, you can plan your travel to bypass it. 

2. Drive defensively. Everyone wants to get where they’re going quickly, but having an accident is a sure-fire way to be delayed. Watch for drivers who are confused, rude, or distracted and be prepared to give way or otherwise avoid collisions. If you must take a high-hazard route, build in the extra time to deal with the headaches. And always use your turn signal, leave a safe distance in front of you, and intentionally turn on your headlights in the rain and at dusk/night so you can be seen. Remember that many cars these days run dashboard lights even when headlights are not on. 

3. Drop the distractions. About 25% of auto accidents resulting in injuries or fatalities nationwide involve distracted driving, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Keep your mind and eyes on the road to steer clear of accidents. Plus, Alabama is a hands-free state, so no handheld devices are permitted while driving. 

4. Keep new drivers off complex roads. If you have a young or new driver in your family or a seasoned driver who has reduced reaction time, encourage use of local roads instead of interstates. With all the roadwork, lane compressions, high speeds, and aggressive drivers, back roads may provide more suitable driving conditions. 

5. Maintain your vehicle. Low tire treads, worn shock absorbers, bad brakes, burned out lights, and broken mirrors are serious safety problems that can lead to accidents. Your car, van, or pickup relies on good tires, shocks, and brakes for operational control, while mirrors and lights help you see and be seen. By the way, auto insurance claims can be denied by your insurer if your vehicle is judged not to be roadworthy.
