With 15% population growth since 2020, Huntsville’s roads are feeling the pressure—and so are car insurance rates. They’ve risen 11% since 2023, according to Insure.com. But you can take steps to minimize what you pay for auto insurance in Huntsville. If you are moving to Huntsville from Colorado Springs or anywhere else, we have some suggestions on how you can avoid accidents and keep car insurance costs under control.
Rough routes near Huntsville
As Alabama’s largest city, Huntsville is a wonderfully vibrant area, with restaurants, entertainment, shopping, and lots of employment. And it’s now growing even more with the relocation of Space Command! Along with those positive attributes, however, come congested roads and lots of work zones on major arteries. From bridge building to repaving to adding lanes, Madison County and Huntsville drivers are facing growing chances of car accidents and insurance claims. Here are some of the most highly travelled routes and construction plans that could affect your commute:
Northern Bypass: This new stretch of road will flow above the northern sector of Huntsville and will be part of a new “beltway,” or “loop road,” that allows drivers to go around the city instead of through it. Completion of the section between Pulaski Pike and U.S. 231/431 is expected in fall 2026. It is designed to alleviate congestion for commuters coming from Tennessee, upper Madison County, and northern Huntsville as they travel to Research Park Blvd. and western Huntsville destinations.
I-565 widening: This project adds additional lanes and improved drainage to about five miles of highway between County Line Rd. and Wall Triana Hwy. Completion is projected for summer 2026 and should alleviate some of the congestion in suburban Huntsville.
New Resolute Way exit off of I-565 into Redstone Arsenal Gate 9: This project aims to relieve congestion and increase the weave/merge lane by a mile at this exit, hopefully reducing cutting in, sudden braking, and the accidents such behavior causes.
Memorial Parkway at Mastin Lake Road: One of the area’s most congested roadways, this section of the parkway is getting a makeover, including a new overpass, but ongoing construction is causing delays and frustrations for drivers.
U.S. 72 widening: This project, not slated to begin until fall of 2026, will broaden the highway, one of Huntsville’s most travelled, between Providence Main and County Line Rd. It will last for about six years and will include bridgework.
Other road construction, such as the U.S. 231 access management, Winchester Rd., Alabama 53, Jeff Rd., Blake Bottom Rd., Arsenal East Connector, and I-565/Memorial Park interchange projects, is in either the bidding or engineering phase, so drivers’ risks will persist for years even as some roadwork makes it to completion.
While you can’t completely avoid the road hazards in and around Huntsville, there are actions you can take to control car accidents and auto insurance rate hikes.
Ways you can avoid car insurance costs on Huntsville roads
Here are five steps that can help you reduce your risk of car accidents and keep auto insurance premiums in Huntsville in check:
1. Adjust your route. Before you leave for your destination, see what roads your GPS suggests you use. Then check Alabama’s AlgoTraffic.com website to see roadwork and accidents along your route. It has a statewide overview map that can be searched by city. Using it, you can bypass work zones.
2. Drive defensively. The leading causes of accidents in Alabama are speeding, distracted driving, and bad weather. Keep alert for drivers who are confused, aggressive, or erratic and plan to give them a wide berth and not get caught up in aggravation. If you must take a route that’s under construction or is chronically congested, build in extra time to arrive before deadline without incident. You can help other drivers avoid hitting you by using your turn signal, following the car in front at a safe distance, and putting on your headlights when it rains or the sun sets. Don’t be fooled by your dashboard lights, though. Many newer vehicles illuminate the dashboard without the headlights being turned on, so double-check when darkness or bad weather arrives.
3. Pay attention to the road. Around 25% of U.S. auto accident injuries or fatalities are connected to distracted driving, according to National Highway Transportation Safety Administration statistics. Keep your mind and eyes on the road so you minimize your chances of a collision. Dropping the distractions can also help you avoid a ticket: Alabama is a hands-free state.
4. Divert new drivers to easier roads. Young drivers, new drivers, and seasoned drivers with slower reaction time may be more comfortable sticking to roads that aren’t as congested or complicated. Work with those in your home to plan calmer routes.
5. Keep your vehicle in good condition. Your tires, shock absorbers, and brakes help you control your car, van, or pickup, and they need to be maintained to work properly and keep you from veering, skidding, or failing to stop on time. And don’t forget your mirrors and lights, which are essential for avoiding collisions. Vehicle maintenance is key to car insurance claims as well as to safety. Your auto insurer can deny your claim if it determines your vehicle was not roadworthy at the time of a crash.
Safe drivers are always more attractive to auto insurers and can get substantially lower rates than those with a history of accidents, so take steps to make sure you have a good driving record. If you are moving to the Huntsville area from Colorado Springs or any other location, you may be happy to find that insurance rates in Alabama are some of the lowest in the nation.
